Picture this scenario.

On the one hand, you have companies and researchers who are looking for consumer data. They want to know what apps people use and why, what TV shows they watch, and–obviously–whether or not they’ve foraged for truffles in the past three months. (Truffles are big business, apparently).

On the other, you’ve got consumers who are happy to provide this information…as long as they’re compensated for their time. Plus, on the off chance that you have foraged for truffles recently, you’re probably itching to share that information with a researcher, right?

Enter Google Opinion Rewards.

Put simply, Google Opinion Rewards is an app which allows users to take surveys in exchange for compensation. The app is now available for both Android and iOS users, so you can download it regardless of what kind of mobile device you’re using.

How does Google Opinion Rewards work?

When you download the app, you’ll be asked to link your PayPal account as part of the signup process. That’s because Google pays you anywhere from 10 cents to $1 per survey, and you’ll need a PayPal account in order to receive those funds.

According to Google, the amount of money that’s paid out per survey depends upon the length and complexity of the survey itself.

Can you earn an unlimited amount of money with Google Opinion Rewards?

It’d be great if you could take surveys to your heart’s content and earn an unlimited amount of cash. Unfortunately, though, that’s not how Google Opinion Rewards works.

Once you’ve downloaded the app and set up your account, you’ll receive a notification whenever a survey is available for you to complete. Once you’ve gotten a notification from the app, you’ll have 24 hours to complete the survey. If you wait more than 24 hours, the survey will no longer be available, and you won’t be able to earn any cash.

There’s no way to request additional surveys beyond what Google makes available to you via this notification function. So, while you may be able to earn a little extra money from Google Opinion Rewards, it’s not likely that you’ll be able to quit your full-time job to become a professional survey taker.

Does your balance ever expire?

Whenever you’ve completed enough surveys to accumulate at least $2 in payout, Google will automatically transfer the funds to your PayPal account. If you don’t reach that $2 threshold, though, there’s no way to access your money. And, if you never cross the $2 line, any funds you’ve earned will expire exactly one year from the date that you completed the related survey.

How do you create Google Opinion Rewards survey questions?

If you’re a company who’s looking to gather market research data from consumers, you can sign up to use Google Opinion Rewards as a survey provider (rather than as a survey taker).

The process itself is fairly straightforward. Once you’ve signed up, here’s how it works:

  • First off, you’ll create the survey questions themselves. When creating your survey, you’re able to add up to 10 questions in total. The questions can be in a variety of formats, such as multiple choice, star rating, and so on.
  • Next, you’ll determine who you want to take your survey. Google provides you with a number of options for demographics, allowing you to custom tailor who your survey is targeted to.
  • Once your survey goes lives, the results will start to roll in.
  • After enough data has been gathered, you can use Google Surveys’ custom analytics to review your respondents’ survey answers. The data is displayed across a number of graphs and includes the ability to segment according to demographics.

What does this mean for app developers?

If you’re an app developer, you might be kicking yourself for failing to think of this setup yourself. After all, using Google Opinion Rewards to conduct your own survey isn’t cheap. The pricing starts at 10 cents per respondent, but that’s for a one question survey only. For 2-10 questions, the price per respondent starts at $1. And, if you want to specify demographics such as age and location targeting, responses can cost up to $10 each. Sure, Google is paying some of that money out to the people taking the surveys–but you can be sure that Google is pocketing their share of it.

Fortunately, though, it’s completely possible to monetize your existing app using rewarded surveys. Regardless of what type of app you have, partnering with a company like TheoremReach allows you to provide users with the chance to earn virtual currency in your app or unlock special features after taking a survey. In exchange, you’ll receive payment from the company conducting the survey research. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
